Juneteenth Celebration Supper

on Wednesday, June 19, 2019 from 7 pm - 9:30 pm

at Emeryville Public Market

A multi-course supper hosted by La Cocina-born businesses Minnie Bell's Soul Movement, Crumble & Whisk & A Girl Named Pinky

Chefs Fernay McPherson, Charles Farrier and Tina Stevens invite you to gather around the table and enjoy a meal in honor of Juneteenth.

Proceeds of the event will be given to Dusty's Fishing Well, a local San Francisco non profit started in 2018 by a native San Franciscan hoping to impart onto the youth, skills taught to her by her mother and many other adults who had a vested hand in raising her.  The skills and additional relevant topics are provided to teens as educational enrichment courses throughout the city of San Francisco.

About JuneteenthOn June 19,1865, more than 2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation went into affect Union soldiers sailed into Galveston Texas and announced the end of the Civil War. With many slaves finding out about their freedom for the first time. This day became known as Juneteenth. A day to celebrate, reflect and heal. As African Americans today we celebrate the journey of continuing to move forward, owning, investing, creating and inspiring within our own communities.

Message from Fernay of Minnie Bell's Soul Movement | "My family came to San Francisco, and the Bay Area, from Port Arthur, Texas. They were part of a wave of Southerners in the Great Migration that decided to set out for a place that they could call their own. Juneteenth, celebrated every year on June 19th, marks the 1865 announcement of the abolition of slavery in that very state; Texas. For me, it's a time to reflect, to gather with family and both to celebrate what we have achieved and to take note of all that remains to be done."

We would like to invite the Bay Area community to join us for a sit-down, family-style supper service to mark Juneteenth and also to celebrate the signing of a multi-year lease for my business at the Emeryville Public Market. I've invited some of my favorite chef collaborators for the dinner, fellow chefs born at La Cocina, and some of my most respected community to share some of their perspectives on Juneteenth and what it means to be black in the Bay.
