Foods and Dishes for Wake-Keeping

Above Plantain As A Finger Food At A Wake

Funerals in West Africa have become a party celebration, the family is expected to serve refreshment to the sympathizers after the funeral service as a way of appreciating these people for being with them in their moment of grief. It is very common to see people eating and drinking at these funerals you would think they were having parties. Some would even pack some food and drinks in plastic bags and take them home for their children or relatives.

Pulling into the main Sierra Leone Port in Freetown a cargo ship with the name China Shipping. It's March 2013 and goods are arriving on mass. We know where is came from, there is no doubt that the owner wants us to know who they are and they have no secrets. What is in the hold of this massive ship from China? How many of these ships have arrived in the West African country this past year?

The Charity Dinner I attended on Saturday was a blast. A lot of money was raised for a worthy cause and I got to eat some African cuisine while enjoying myself, not bad at all for a Saturday night out.

I did not get a chance to talk to management as everyone was rushing around serving customers, taking orders and trying to maintain calm. So you guys will get to hear from the owners of Nivla Restaurant, Camberwell Road at a later date.

No doubt you've started to think about doing your Christmas shopping. I'm halfway through mine, I decided to start in September this year and I'm glad I did. The older you get, the more children there are to buy presents for and it's a bloody nightmare. Some of them I honestly cant even remember how old they are. Gone are the days when I could just buy a couple of presents for family and friends. Christmas should be called Cripplemas, it will cripple you by the time its done. So the best advice I can give anyone is - start shopping early.

A couple of weeks ago in Belsize Park, I stumbled across the pepperandstew range outside Budgens. I was pleasantly surprised to find an African food product with none of the slap-dash labeling, awful contrasting colours and a grinning, fat 'mammy' type face staring back at me. This product brands itself in a style up there with Pataks, Uncle Ben and others. Finally I thought to myself, someone out there has taken the time to nurture and transform the way African food products are branded and produced.
